Visit Jordan Valley

Jordan Valley sits on US-95 in Malheur County, Oregon, a few miles from the Idaho line and a comfortable half-day’s drive from Boise. It has been a waypoint since the 1863 gold rush — and it is still the place travelers take a breath before the Owyhee desert.

Why people come

Because this is the gateway to the Owyhee Canyonlands — the “Grand Canyon of Oregon,” a wilderness of river gorges, lava flows, and painted rock bigger than Yellowstone and emptier than almost anywhere in the country. Rafters stage here for the Wild & Scenic Owyhee. Photographers come for Leslie Gulch. Hunters come for the chukar country. Stargazers come because the night sky here is the real, original article.

And plenty of people simply stop on the long US-95 run — then discover the only Basque pelota fronton in Oregon, a stone church a century old, and pie at the JV Cafe, and end up staying the night.

When to come

• Spring (March–June): river season on the Owyhee, wildflowers, green range, and the Big Loop Rodeo in May — the biggest weekend of the year.
• Summer (July–September): hot, dry days for Leslie Gulch, the reservoir, and lava country early and late; Milky Way nights in between.
• Fall (October–November): bird season, golden cottonwoods, crisp light — many locals’ favorite.
• Winter: quiet, cold, and beautiful; the tailwater trout fishing stays good and you may have the desert to yourself.

Know before you go

This is remote country by any standard. Cell service ends at the edge of town, backcountry roads punish bald tires, and the next services are an hour away in every direction. None of that is a problem if you arrive with a full tank and a plan — start with Plan Your Trip.
